Capabilities

Project AlternativesTREDIS® is designed to provide economic impact analysis and benefit-cost analysis for transportation projects and programs. The system is comprehensive -- covering passenger and freight transport via air, water and rail, as well as truck, car and bus travel. It is designed to span the interests of both: (1) those involved with transportation facility/system management and planning (including passenger and freight modes), and (2) those interested in economic development at local, regional, and state levels. TREDIS can be used to:

  • estimate the economic impact of constructing and operating a transportation facility (roadway, rail line or air/sea terminal) or service
  • examine alternative strategies for managing a transportation corridor
  • perform a comprehensive freight performance evaluation
  • weigh the benefits and costs of alternative transportation investment strategies or policies
  • estimate the impact of congestion on households and industries (by sector), based on their usage of different modes
  • systematically evaluate the economic benefit of improving multimodal access to consumer, producer, and labor markets.

For any of its applications, TREDIS can be used either as a comprehensive planning tool or as a back-of-the-envelope sketch planning tool. The level of sophistication is up to the user, but projects can be set up and run in as little as 15 minutes. More comprehensive multiregional and multimodal projects might take several hours to prepare.

TREDIS is a web-based service, using state-of-the-art technology, which allows it to be accessed by multiple users in multiple locations, for multiple projects. Users may input data directly into web browser or “cut-and-paste” from spreadsheet programs or text files. For large scenarios and multiple projectsm inputs may be loaded as a “batch file”. Assumptions and inputs may be changed at anytime and results are instantaneously updated. Additionally, all inputs and assumptions are made transparent to users. TREDIS may also be used with, or linked to, a variety of other models and tools such as transportation demand modeling or economic forecasting software.
