Future of the Interstate Highway System: TREDPLAN Use for Assessing Future Scenarios

The U.S. Congress requested and authorized a national panel to evaluate needs for renewing the nation’s interstate highway system. The study, "Renewing the National Commitment to the Interstate Highway System: A Foundation for the Future." The study was conducted under the auspices of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies, to identify actions needed to upgrade and restore the Interstate Highway System to fulfill its role as a crucial national asset, serving the needs of people, cities and towns, businesses, and the military.

FreewayAn element of this study involved examination of economic outlook factors that could shift future highway investment needs. This element of the study drew upon a comparison of future risk and uncertainty issues, utilizing TREDPLAN to examine how emerging future scenarios (regarding shifts in economic development and global trade) could affect future truck and commuting use of interstate highways.
